This week, Cassandra and I discuss the top ten television shows we saw in 2014. For me, the #1 is also my #1 television show ever, so if I wasn’t forceful enough in my praise, we need to meet and have a sit down. Of course, we’re always influenced by what we’ve seen recently, so I don’t know if I’ll end up loving for example, Revenge, as much as I do now, but it’s the third show I’ve binge-watched, after Kill la Kill and Veronica Mars, both this year.

And I guess Cassandra talks about Orange is the New Black.

Next week, we’re back on track with Ghost in the Shell SAC: 2nd Gig!!

Also: “That Australian woman.” Her name is Rose Byrne, you fuck. A great actress — easily the best part of Neighbors. She was also in Sunshine. That Australian woman. You piece of shit.

WARNING: This podcast contains some hate for — Selfie (ABC), Community, Aaron Sorkin
And spoilers for: (spoiler alerts in podcast), but also Homeland Season 3 and/or 4

Runtime: [2:48:56]

Music Selection: Sirius, by Eir Aoi
I like playing songs at the end of these podcasts, but that will END with the final entry in the Ghost in the Shell Double ‘Versary. I hate it. What I hate most of all, thank you for asking, is intro songs for podcasts. What the hell — just let me hear what I came for! There’s a screenwriting podcast that I really like that has an opening, and I scan over the beginning minute but then I miss like the first five seconds of the actual talking! So frustrating. That’s why the early days of the BBPX were like -abrupt opening- and -anticlimactic closing- which I think is funny but your mileage.

  1. I liked hearing Cassandra’s thoughts on Girls and Lena Dunham. I’ve not seen any of girls, because as much of a feminist as I’d like to think I am, everything about the show sounds like it would irritate the hell out of me to watch. I appreciated hearing her perspective.

I recently suggested Kill La Kill to a friend of mine last week, and she killed it in days. She really enjoyed it, which was great since she’s skittish around nudity. Kill La Kill’s a terrific show, and a great one to come out in 2014.

And, as a Batman podcaster I feel I should defend against the slighting of Batgirl, but really only the best one. To make an effusive suggestion, Cassandra Cain’s not only the best character to go by the Batgirl moniker, but one of the best comic book characters ever created. I’d think the two of you specifically would really enjoy her should you ever give reading her 2000-2006 series a chance. Speaking with bias, as she’s a top favorite of mine, but still, I ain’t lyin’!

    1. Yeah I haven’t given Girls the time of day. I really like Louie, but that’s as far as I’ll go into the whole ‘independent film’ stylings of television (or anything). Transparent is boring as hell.

Kill la Kill on the other hand…

My ignorance of comic books is comprehensive — aside from the occasional mangwar or Dark Horse movie tie-in, the Marvel and DC have always eluded me. But I am always on the lookout for cool superheroines, and after striking out with Wonder Woman, and picking up a Frank Miller Elektra for God knows what reason, I think I’ll give the Batgirl a try.

It was definitely unfair of me to dismiss Batgirl simply for being a Ms. Male, but maybe that’s the hazard of me talking at a mic with no script. The natural idiot within is revealed (I still can’t believe I referred to Rose Byrne as “That Australian Woman”).

  2. I can guarantee with 100% positivity that if you’re jonesing for badass female characters who’s Asian ethnicity is just an aspect of her character, with a terrific origin story and great, unique storytelling unlike anything produced in comics before or since, the original Kelley Puckett/Damion Scott run of Batgril from issues #1-#37 is the comic for you. If you have any sort of comic book reading software (I suggest Comical), I could send you some issues if you’d like.

    1. That does sound right up my alley. I think I’ll take you up on that offer — just downloaded Comical, seems like a nifty software. Thanks man, that’s really nice.
