Avatar marks James Cameron’s return to science-fiction after more than a decade, It would’ve been a tremendous event for that alone, but of course, we remember the scale of that thing. Hard to believe it’s been five years, in just a month and a day. With that time, I’ve been able to reconcile feelings on the matter. I don’t enjoy this movie, but I do see its great value as that very rare thing — an environmentally conscious Hollywood film.

But, problematic representations and an unimaginative outlook on warfare threaten to get in the way.
