Ep. 1 – Man as Architecture: Robocop and the American Dream

In the inaurgrable episode, we take a look at one of the most classic 80s scifi flicks, standing out in an era that brought out the best in masters like John Carpenter, David Cronenberg, and James Cameron. John Scalzi describes this movie as “intelligent trash,” so let’s follow up on that. What is it exactly that makes this movie such a memorable outing for the genre, at top form here in satire and violence? Does it warrant the upcoming remake or is it a product of its time?

I heard… when those Tigers are playin.

  1. Wonderful site you have here but I was curious if you knew
of any community forums that cover the same topics talked about here?

I’d really like to be a part of community where I can get advice from other experienced individuals that share
the same interest. If you have any suggestions, please let me know.
    Bless you!

    1. Well, thank you, Robot, that’s very kind.

Now to commence a recounting of the history of myself and forums. There is none, and yet, it’s long and labored. I have a bad habit of never remembering that forums exist. I’ve created a dozen accounts on various forums for equally various reasons — advertising, actual discussion — but I never kept up with them because I’ve had this problem that roundaboutedly answers your question.

I created this site in part because I hoped to a fill not a niche but a void. Science-fiction circles are always so academic if it’s literature, or non-existent if it’s movies, because there is no culture for scifi film. Maybe that’ll return in 2016 with the deluge of tentpoles: Star Wars, Avatar, The Matrix, etc. But for now, scifi sites that I’ve found mostly cover scifi TV, which in my Orphan Black podcasts I’ve mostly dismissed. If you don’t like Buffy or BSG, you’re out, and Buffy isn’t even scifi!

So I was hoping to start discussion, because I haven’t found it anywhere else. Granted, I haven’t been looking for very long. I found a few places, but then, my laziness kicks in.

I suppose it’s sad to refer to what I’m doing is starting discussion, seeing as how much traffic this site gets, but that’s always been the theory, and so maybe one day this site will be enough for you. In the meantime, I’m not sure.

That’s a strange spam post, though, I’ve never seen that before.
